Family holds vigil for 2-year-old killed in Houma

In July of 2022, Harry was found dead in a trash can. The tragedy led state lawmakers to pass Ezekiel’s Law, which changed how child abuse cases are handled.

HOUMA, La. — Two years after his death, friends and family are still mourning the life of young Ezekiel Harry.

“It’s still kind of hard,” Ezekiel’s grandmother Cynthia Harry said. “It’s still difficult and hard to believe this happened.”

They say time heals all wounds.

“We really miss him,” Harry said.

That isn’t the case for anyone who knew two-year-old Ezekiel Harry.

“He was very playful. He liked to go to everyone. I liked being around him. He was my baby,” Harry said.

On Thursday, his loved ones held a vigil. His grandmother Cynthia Harry talked about how different life would look if her baby were still here.

“At my house running around, trying to take my dishes out, playing with my keys, knocking on my door, and coming to get in bed with me,” Harry said.

In July of 2022, Harry was found dead in a trash can. Investigators say he died from blunt force trauma to the head.

The people accused of his murder are his own mother, Maya Jones, and her live-in boyfriend, Jermaine Robinson.

“Today is his mom’s birthday,” Family friend Michael Willis said. “The day he was killed.”

Both Jones and Robinson are expected to appear in court later this month for a motions hearing.

“It’s been a tough situation for two years since I’ve been coming around,” Willis said.

That hearing is two years too late, according to family friend Michael Willis.

“That’s hard on the family, the waiting and waiting to see if justice will be served,” Willis said.

For Harry’s loved ones, the vigil was part of moving on, but his loss is a wound time can’t heal.

“It’s going to be a hard process,” Willis said.
