Two killed in head-on crash in Terrebonne Parish

The collision caused one of the driver's truck to travel off the road into Bayou Black and overturn. State police said both trucks were engulfed in flames.

TERREBONNE PARISH, La. — A head-on crash in Terrebonne Parish killed two drivers on Wednesday morning.

Louisiana State Police Troop C said they responded to the crash around 5 a.m. near Sugar Ridge Drive on Louisiana Highway 182.

Troopers identified the victims as 39-year-old Melissa Stelly and 28-year-old Duncan Prentice. They said Stelly was traveling east on LA Hwy 182 in a right curve driving a Ford F-350. At the same time, Prentice was traveling west driving a Ford F-150 and was struck by Stelly who crossed the centerline.

The collision caused Prentice's truck to travel off the road into Bayou Black and overturn. State police said both trucks were engulfed in flames. 

Both drivers suffered fatal injuries and died on the scene.

Troop C said they are investigating if both drivers were wearing a seatbelt and standard toxicology results are pending for both victims.

State troopers remind drivers to always obey speed limits and follow traffic rules to minimize the risk of crashes. Avoid distractions like texting or using your phone while driving to stay focused on the road. Lastly, never drink or consume drugs and drive, as impaired driving can have deadly consequences.

Troop C has investigated 29 fatal crashes resulting in 33 fatalities in 2023.
