TICKFAW, La. — Louisiana State Police are urging drivers to avoid I-55 between Tickfaw and Independence due to a crash involving a commercial vehicle carrying hazardous materials.
The crash, which police say occurred Thursday morning, prompted the initial closure of the lanes in both directions as first responders work to safely manage the hazardous material and clear the roadway.
Northbound lanes opened around 2 p.m.
State Police advise motorists to seek alternate routes and remain patient as crews work to reopen the interstate as quickly and safely as possible.
"I-55 South is expected to be closed for an extended period of time. There is no threat to the public," State Police said in a social media post.
