NEW ORLEANS — Folks wanting a pricey piece of New Orleans history are in luck as one of the city's most famous homes is for sale with an asking price of $10.25 million – $995 per square foot.

However, according to local real estate broker Patrick Knudsen, the LaLaurie Mansion might not already be available.

The Latter and Blum | Compass realtor told WWL Louisiana media partner Nola.com that an offer was made by and out-of-state investor before the property even hit the market.

"It's certainly good news and I hope it turns into amazing news," said Knudsen, who also told Nola.com that current owner Michael Whalen of Houston had accepted the undisclosed offer. "I've been in real estate 18 years and know not to count any chickens before they're hatched."

Whalen purchased the 10,300-square-foot home in 2010 for $2.1 million.

The 200-year-old mansion features eight bedrooms, a private speakeasy and a 2,000-bottle wine cellar.

The mansion famously inspired the FX show "American Horror Story" due to its deadly history, and actor Nicolas Cage even called it home before losing it to foreclosure in 2009.
