Growing memorial pays respects to fallen Deputy David Michel Jr.

HARVEY - Friends, colleagues, and complete strangers honor Deputy David Michel Jr. A temporary memorial has been created on the corner of Manhattan Boulevard and Ascot Rd.

The memorial grew all morning on Thursday. People were stopping by to pay their respects, placing flowers, signs and balloons on the spot near where Deputy Michel was shot while on duty.

Law enforcement officers, from different agencies came as well. They embraced one another, left flowers and had a moment of silence for the death of David Michel. Many are heartbroken over the loss of their colleague and friend. They say he was someone who was dedicated to protecting and serving and always had a smile on his face.

"I mean, all he was doing was his job that he loved so much," said friend Guy Bryant. "And I tell you what, I would go out with him anytime, any day of the week. As much as he put his life on the linfe for us, I would do the same for him."

Even those who don't know Deputy Michel stopped by to offer their condolences.

Christina Gegenheimer stopped by the memorial with her two children. They say Deputy Michel had given her daughter, Ava, a medal and they wanted to stop by and do the same. They also left a note "thanking him for his service and for being a Hero in Blue."

"I wanted to come and have us remember him as a hero," said Gegenheimer. "He protected the residents, he saved somebody yesterday. (Jerman Neveaux) was following somebody and he saved somebody and I want to show them it's important to come here and remember him."

Close friends say Michel was a wonder son, loving father, awesome grandfather and a great cop.
