NEW ORLEANS — Former New Orleans councilman and judge, Eddie Sapir, passed away Tuesday evening. He was 86.

Sapir served on the New Orleans City Council for more than a decade, from 1967 to 1974, then again from 1998 until 2006.

In between, he was an Orleans Parish Municipal Court Judge for 20 years.

Sapir was also Billy Martin's lawyer and friend, and represented Martin while he was Manager of the New York Yankees.

Congressman Troy Carter issued a statement following Sapir's passing.

“I am saddened to learn of the death of my dear friend, the Honorable Eddie Sapir. As a former State Representative, Municipal Court Judge, and City Council President, he truly loved our city and its people! New Orleans has lost one of its greats. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his son JP and the rest of the family!”
