NEW ORLEANS — Another round of fog is expected Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning. After a dangerous commute led to a multi-vehicle crash on the Causeway, we want to remind you of some safety tips — in hopes that Wednesday will be a more seamless drive.
WWL Louisiana Reporter Alyssa Curtis has more tips to keep you safe.
Just like other changes in weather like rain — you have to adjust your driving during fog to ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road.
Fog can come up and change very unexpectedly and can be more prevalent on bridges than on other roads. So it can be extremely dangerous, we've seen it before, not just in Tuesday's crash, but also last year with a deadly pile-up.
Fog Safety Tips:
- Slow down -When driving in fog, the most important safety tip is to drive slowly.
- Leave extra space- Leave a little extra space between you and the car in front of you.
- Use your turn signal- Use your turn signal and use it early.
- Wait it out - If you can avoid rush hour and wait the fog out, do that. If not, give yourself extra time for your commute.
- Use your low beams or your fog lights. Don't use your high beams — that can cause glare and actually make it harder for you to see.
"It's very important to turn on your lights, use your low beams," said a Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development representative. "Not necessarily just your fog lights or your high beams but your low beams so you can see, more importantly, so people can see you."
It's a good idea to check if your car has fog lights before you get on the road.
Most importantly, always keep your eye on the road.
