NEW ORLEANS — More than a dozen people and a dog escaped a three-alarm fire early Wednesday morning in Mid-City, just one day before Thanksgiving Day.
According to the New Orleans Fire Department, the three-alarm fire engulfed two multi-unit dwellings, drawing nearly three dozen firefighters to the 200 block of N. Norman C. Francis Parkway.
NOFD spokesperson Edward Holmes told WWL Louisiana that three people were treated for smoke inhalation. Of the three treated one man was treated for minor burn injuries after he ran back into the burning home to rescue the dog, Holmes said.
The fire department was dispatched to the scene at 2:17 a.m. Four minutes later, they found a four-unit building at 216 N. Norman C. Francis Parkway and a three-unit building at 224 N. Norman C. Francis Parkway already heavily involved in flames.
The fire’s intensity prompted the NOFD to strike a second alarm at 2:24 a.m., as crews worked to suppress the flames and prevent them from spreading. Despite their efforts, the blaze showed signs of advancing toward an adjacent occupied home and three commercial properties on Bienville Street, leading to a third alarm at 2:48 a.m.
NOFD is still on the scene working the fire. The cause is yet to be determined.
