Gas explosion in Avondale sets home on fire, kills 1, injures 5 other people

AVONDALE, La. — An explosion from a possible gas leak in Avondale set a home on fire killing an elderly woman and injuring 5 others including children.

The fire broke out early Monday morning at a house on Avondale Garden Road and 3rd Street.

A spokesperson for the Jefferson Parish Fire Department confirmed to WWL Louisiana’s Winston Reed that an elderly woman died in the fire and at least five other people were injured in the blaze. The spokesperson says the victims are a mix of adults and children.

Authorities say the Atmos utility company was alerted to a gas leak in the area. Neighbors tell us they heard an explosion before the fire.

Family said the elderly woman who died was about 88 years old.
