NEW ORLEANS — Artwork dedicated to the New Orleans music icon, Fats Domino was unveiled in the 9th Ward. His family joined the artist who created the piece to celebrate with a ribbon cutting.
At the intersection of Fats Domino Ave. and St Claude Ave. is where the art piece dedicated to the iconic Fats Domino sits, the utility box just a few steps down from where the icon once lived.
The Fats Domino Art Box project is part of the St Claude Ave. beautification project. Antoine Price, a New Orleans native, is the artist who painted the tribute on this utility box. He says he worked with the family throughout the whole project, and that being a part of this project is an honor.
Prince said, "The fact that he could have lived anywhere in the world he decided he wanted to stay home, to me that's uncommon and I wanted to pay homage to this man by doing this rendition of him."
At Tuesday's unveiling Fats Domino's family stood on the front porch of his house remembering him. The family said the artwork captures his legacy. Andrea Domino, Fats Domino’s daughter said, "My father loved the community, he loved the ninth ward, he wouldn't live anywhere else he was born and raised here. I feel he is always looking down over us. I feel today he is looking down thrilled, with his signature smile."
Fats Domino was a pioneer in rock 'n' roll. The goal of beautifying the St. Claude Ave corridor is to revitalize the area and bring it back to what it once was.
