Early voting surges in New Orleans Metro. Here's where you can cast your vote now

By the end of Saturday, more than 21,500 voters cast their ballots in Orleans Parish.

NEW ORLEANS — Gilbert Watts told WWL Louisiana on Monday that it was a top priority for him to cast his ballot early.

“I tried to beat the crowd on the voting day," he said.

It's why he chose to vote at the state's newest temporary early voting site, the Treme Recreational Center. There were no lines when he showed up.

“It’s a steady flow, our other four sites have received quite a bit of traffic,” said Chief Deputy Director Registrar Danielle Duplessis-Hammond.

By the end of Saturday, more than 21,500 voters cast their ballots in Orleans Parish.

“Some people seem to think that it’s not important to vote so I guess they don’t know history. All the advancements we made in the last sixty years [are] because we got the right to vote," said Watts.

Over in Jefferson Parish records were set with more than 23,000 votes cast by the end of early voting day 2.

Duplessis-Hammond says that even though the presidential race is projected to be a tight one across the country, Louisiana is expected to announce election results on election night.

“We do election day a little differently than most states," she said. "We comprise those numbers together on election night again with the parish board of election supervisors and by the close of the polls, roughly some hours after that were able to give the numbers, for the most part.”

In Jefferson Parish, there are six early voting sites and five in Orleans.
