Drivers urged to be careful with foggy and smoky conditions predicted

LA DOTD says there's the possibility roads will be closed because of poor conditions.

NEW ORLEANS — Drivers are being warned that we could see foggy conditions on our roads again.

Louisiana DOTD says it'll be a mix of fog and smoke from the fire burning in New Orleans East. That fire has been burning for two weeks, according to Pon Dixson with Bayou Sauvage National Urban Wildlife Refuge.

Dixson said, "It is not on the national wildlife refuge property. It's burning on private property right across the canal from the refuge."

The smoke from that blaze, combined with a fog advisory could see conditions on the road reduced significantly. Scott Boyle with Louisiana DOTD told WWLTV that State Police will be monitoring "The 12-mile bridge along Interstate 10, between I-310 and US 51 in LaPlace, we've staged and traffic control devices on each of the 12-mile section and state police will be monitoring that tonight and the weekend."

DOTD says there's the possibility the spillway could be closed this weekend if we see another super fog, but that's based on the final assessment from state police.

Boyle says the department along with the state police will be monitoring roads, he says DOTD doesn't shut down an interstate because of fog.

"State police have the authority to close a road down for any reason. Our policy for road closures indicates roads that are impassable due to flooding and or ice on the roadway."

Dixson says the fire in New Orleans East could burn for months, urging people to be careful on the roads, saying, "We want people to really slow down because visibility will be greatly reduced.. stay home if you don't have to be out here in these conditions. Please stay home."

DOTD advises drivers to take it easy, use caution and leave space between you and the car in front of you.
