Unhoused people given notice to leave Downtown area

Councilmember Lesli Harris, who represents the area released a statement suggesting the notices came from the state.

NEW ORLEANS — The state may be planning another sweep of unhoused people in the Downtown area. People camped out in the French Quarter area told us the notices had been distributed to them in the past few days.

It said they must leave within 24 hours and "failure to comply may result in legal action." There's a list of shelters and other resources, and it said they may be moved to an encampment under business U.S. 90 if they refuse.

Nothing on the flyer said who's giving the order. On Saturday, Councilmember Lesli Harris, who represents that area released a statement suggesting they came from the state.

"Despite a seemingly productive dialogue among State and City partners about effective ways to collaborate on homelessness, the State is set to move forward with another round of sweeps," she said.

Harris said after the last round, "case managers lost contact with over 63 unhoused residents, who were set to be housed within weeks."

We reached out to Governor Landry's Office and state police and have not received a response.
