Visitation for 'Dooky' Chase III held Thursday morning

The services at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church on Philip Street in New Orleans at 8:30 a.m., will honor the community leader and son of local restaurant legends.

NEW ORLEANS — The funeral mass and visitation for "Dooky" Chase III took place Thursday morning, honoring the life of a New Orleans community leader and educator.

Visitation for Chase III has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church. The church on 1923 St. Philip St., in New Orleans.

The funeral mass started afterward at 11:30 a.m. 

Edgar L. "Dooky" Chase III, who died on Feb. 21 was the son of restaurant owners Leah Chase and "Dooky" Chase, Jr. He was a community leader in his own right, serving on numerous city boards, including the Metropolitan Crime Commission, New Orleans Botanic Garden and the Anti-Defamation League of South Central Region. Chase had also been a leader at local universities, serving in leadership roles at Dillard and Loyola.

“In addition to being a CPA and attorney, Dooky was a lifelong educator and university administrator who educated and mentored thousands of students and young professionals. He was a principled man, who was joyfully dedicated to being of service to others. Dooky was filled with passion and faith which was exhibited in his daily life and in his interactions with others. He believed in the power of love for mankind and was guided by the ideals of liberty," Chase's family said last week.

Chase III died from cardiac arrest, according to family members. He was 74.
