Former Terrebonne Parish President, beloved football coach dies at 81

Donald "Don" Schwab Sr., passed away in Houma on Saturday, his family confirmed.

TERREBONNE PARISH, La. — Former Terrebonne Parish President Donald "Don" Schwab Sr., passed away in Houma on Saturday following an extended illness, according to Nola.com. He was 81.

According to our partners, the family confirmed his death. Schwab was known as a beloved high school and college football coach. He was also "a star fullback" for LSU.

Born in Labadieville, he was the youngest of five siblings and graduated from Thibodaux High School in 1961.

Don Schwab Sr. was a star fullback for the Tigers in 1964. He coached football at in Baton Rouge and Houma.

He served as the Terrebonne Parish President from 2004 until 2008. "Schwab was a steady leader when Hurricane Katrina brought 11,000 evacuees to Terrebonne Parish in 2005," Nola.com reported.

Schwab Sr.'s son, Donald "DP" Jr., 54, said his father left a great impact.

"If success is judged by impact, the kind of impact you have, then he was the wealthiest and most successful man that I know," he told our partners on Sunday.

He leaves behind his son, his two daughters, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
