Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee has passed away

Lee's more than 30-year career included Legislative victories from establishing the Juneteenth Federal Holiday to reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.

WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has died her office announced Friday evening. The representative from Houston, Texas began her political career as a city council member before winning her congressional seat in the mid-1990s.

Congresswoman Lee was acknowledged worldwide for her fights for racial justice, criminal justice, and human rights, with a special emphasis on women and children.

Her more than 30-year career included Legislative victories that impacted millions, from establishing the Juneteenth Federal Holiday to reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.

Louisiana congressman Troy Carter issued a statement following yesterday's announcement.

“The United States Congress has lost a true stateswoman, and Texas, along with our entire country, has lost a fierce defender of justice, fairness, and our democracy,” said Congressman Carter.

“Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee will be sorely missed by her immediate family, her Congressional Black Caucus family, her Democratic Caucus family, all the citizens of Texas, and countless others she touched around the world. Her unwavering commitment to her principles and her tireless advocacy for the underrepresented has left an indelible mark on our nation,”

“On a personal note, Sheila was not just a colleague but also a cherished friend and mentor to me and many others. Her wisdom, compassion, and strength have guided us through many challenges. Her legacy will continue to inspire us all to strive for a better, more just world. Rest in peace, my dear sister. Job well done!”

The cause of death was not released, but last month Lee revealed she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Lee was 74 years old.
