Hurricane relief drive for Helene victims in Jefferson Parish

There are drop-off sites at the Yenni Building in Elmwood, the General Government building in Gretna, or the Jefferson Parish surplus building in Metairie.

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — Around two weeks after Hurricane Helene ravaged communities across six states, and just days before Milton strikes again in Florida, many are still in need of basic necessities.

That’s why Jefferson Parish and Second Harvest Food Bank started a hurricane supply drive on Monday.

From Gretna to Metairie, Parish officials say they’ve already received hundreds of donations.

Patricia Fertitta knows what it’s like for a hurricane to change everything.

“During Katrina, not knowing when we would be able to be whole again, it was a very trying time,” Jefferson Parish resident Patricia Fertitta said.

When she heard about the relief drive, she drove straight to the grocery store.

“I felt like I had to do something to at least know we were reaching out to these folks who have had such devastation,” Fertitta said.

Other than her cleaning supplies, she hopes she can give one more thing to the storm victims.

“Hope that things will get better,” Fertitta said.
