Clancy's Commentaries: Survey says voters feel safer, but some still give Mayor Cantrell very low marks

Only 33 percent of New Orleans voters approve of Cantrell’s performance, while 57 percent disapprove, U.N.O. "Quality of Life" survey says.

NEW ORLEANS — The latest U.N.O. “quality of life” survey shows New Orleans voters are less concerned about crime than two years ago, but they still give Mayor LaToya Cantrell very low job ratings.

Those are among the topics of this week’s Commentary by WWL Louisiana political analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

Since 1986, U-N-O’s Survey Research Center has measured voter satisfaction every two years in Orleans and Jefferson parishes. The latest results show voters in both parishes feel much safer these days, but New Orleans voters continue to give Mayor Cantrell very low marks.

Only 33 percent of New Orleans voters approve of Cantrell’s performance, while 57 percent disapprove. That’s almost no change from two years ago.

But New Orleanians love new police chief Anne Kirkpatrick. 56 percent approve of her performance, with only 21 percent disapproving.

In Jefferson, both Parish President Cynthia Lee-Sheng and Sheriff Joe Lopinto have stratospheric approval ratings of 73 percent.

Bottom line: Voters in both parishes feel significantly safer, and they know who they want to thank for that.
