Clancy's Commentary: Aftermath of failed Trump assassination

Regardless of what politicians say about each other, if we can stop yelling and start respecting each other again, eventually, the politicians will follow.

NEW ORLEANS — That assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump has caused Americans of all political stripes to examine the absence of civility in our nation’s political discourse.

That’s the topic of this week’s Commentary by WWL Louisiana Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

Politicians love to use fear and anger to get our attention. That’s why inflammatory rhetoric dominates America’s political discourse. It’s turned us into a nation at war with itself. And it inevitably leads to violence.

Thankfully, former President Trump was not seriously injured or killed in Saturday’s attack.

But, what now?

It’s axiomatic that when the people lead, politicians follow. We can’t count on politicians to lead us back to civility. So let’s start by recognizing that it’s okay to disagree. In fact, it’s healthy.

There’s no need for anyone to lose friendships over politics. Real friends don’t let that happen.

Regardless of what politicians say about each other, if we can stop yelling and start respecting each other again, eventually, the politicians will follow.
