Clancy's Commentary: Voters don’t like Gov. Landry’s concealed carry law

Yet lawmakers refuse to exempt high-traffic areas like the French Quarter, Superdome and Arena, and Convention Center from the new law.

NEW ORLEANS — Smart politicians pay close attention to their constituents’ opinions. Which makes me wonder: What were state lawmakers thinking when they passed a law allowing almost everyone 18 and older to carry a concealed firearm — without a permit and without any training?

According to a recent Times-Picayune poll, taken by WWL Louisiana pollster Ron Faucheux, 63% of voters oppose that new law, which takes effect July 4. Support for the current requirement of permits and training cut across all political, racial and gender lines.

Yet lawmakers refuse to exempt high-traffic areas like the French Quarter, Superdome and Arena, and Convention Center from the new law.

That should make us all wonder: Who do our elected representatives really represent?
