NEW ORLEANS — “Rapid intensification.” That’s the latest addition to our hurricane lexicon here in south Louisiana. And it’s not something to shrug off.
We live in an age of bigger, badder storms that intensify quickly, even as they’re about to make landfall. That’s why it’s critical to have a detailed evacuation plan. It’s been more than 15 years since we used Contraflow, which turns interstates into one-way exits. But waiting too long to evacuate can take the “flow” out of Contraflow.
So, make your evacuation plans now. Stock up on flashlights, batteries, water and nonperishable foods. Keep your vehicles gassed up, and be ready to leave on short notice. Hopefully, it won’t be necessary. But, as always with hurricanes, better safe than sorry.
