NEW ORLEANS — I’m a lifelong outdoorsman and a responsible gun owner.
I believe safety through training is the most important rule of gun ownership – so I got trained in gun safety, even though it wasn’t required. Requiring such training does not violate the Second Amendment.
It just makes us safer.
Yet, state lawmakers and Governor Jeff Landry are putting our safety at risk by pushing a law that allows most 18-year-olds to carry concealed handguns, without any training or permit.
Some argue that 18-year-olds can join the military, so why not let them carry handguns?
Seriously? The military requires extensive, continual training in firearm safety.
18-year-olds can’t buy cigarettes, or alcohol, for obvious reasons of public safety.
For the same reason, no one under 21 should be allowed to carry a concealed handgun.
