Clancy's Commentary: Mike Yenni begins his new role over loud objections

Yenni’s new job makes him next in line, at least temporarily, if DiMarco retires.

NEW ORLEANS — In politics, optics matter. If something looks bad, it’s probably a bad idea. And few things look worse than Jefferson Parish Registrar of Voters Dennis DiMarco hiring disgraced former parish president Mike Yenni as his chief deputy.

Yenni didn’t seek re-election after this station exposed him for sexting a teenage boy while serving as Kenner’s mayor. He’s been a political pariah ever since.

Yenni’s new job makes him next in line, at least temporarily, if DiMarco retires. The parish council appoints the permanent registrar, and it’s clear Yenni won’t ever get that job. So it makes one wonder: Is this some sort of redemption tour? Will it increase Yenni’s retirement benefits? Whatever their reasons, DiMarco and Yenni are thumbing their noses at Jefferson citizens.
