Clancy's Commentary: Mayor Cantrell leaves for economic conference in Qatar

Trouble is, while the mayor travels the world, not enough here in New Orleans actually works.

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is out of town again these days, this time at an economic conference in Qatar.

Comic genius Mel Brooks famously joked, “It’s good to be the king.” Brooks’ memorable punchline apparently has inspired Mayor Cantrell, whose frequent travels at taxpayers’ expense reflect an attitude of “It’s good to be the mayor.”

I can’t think of any mayor who has enjoyed the perks of office – especially travel – more than Cantrell. Right now, she’s in Qatar, right after going to Canada.

Since Jan. 1 of last year, Cantrell has been out of town for almost three and a half months. That’s the equivalent of almost ten weeks a year.

No doubt, Cantrell will say these are all work trips. The trouble is, while the mayor travels the world, not enough here in New Orleans actually works.
