Clancy's Commentary: Library lapse exemplifies Louisiana’s descent into illiteracy

Commentary by WWL Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

Our official state library no longer belongs to the highly respected American Library Association. Until recently, that kind of news would have been scandalous. Now, it’s just another example of Louisiana’s descent into illiteracy.

There was a time when librarians were considered the nicest people around. I still think they are. But they’re also among the most abused, thanks to unfounded, hysterical claims, mostly by religious conservatives, that librarians are sexualizing children.

When it comes to sexualizing children, know this: thousands of Louisiana kids have been sexually abused by clergymen and “youth ministers.” Thousands.

Know how many Louisiana librarians have been accused of child molestation?

Zero.

Remember those numbers next time you hear someone accuse librarians of sexualizing kids.
