Clancy's Commentary: July 4th is the effective date of Louisiana’s Wild West Law

Be careful with fireworks and be wary of firearms.

NEW ORLEANS — On Thursday, we’ll commemorate our nation’s founding. As we do that, we should also be aware that July 4th is also the effective date of Louisiana’s Wild West Law. That’s my name for the new law that allows almost anyone 18 or older to carry a concealed firearm — without a permit and without any training whatsoever.

As an outdoorsman, I’m all for responsible gun ownership, including concealed carry. Polls consistently show most Louisianans agree that letting 18-year-olds carry concealed firearms, without a permit and without training, is the opposite of responsible.

Unfortunately, our lawmakers and Governor Landry disagree. So, I wish everyone a happy and safe July 4th. Be careful with fireworks … and be wary of firearms.
