The New Orleans City Council will hold a special meeting Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock to discuss the city’s crime problem.
It’s been four weeks since Mayor Cantrell agreed to conduct a national search for a permanent police chief. So far, there’s no evidence that that’s happening. Meanwhile, the mayor’s response to the latest spike in gun violence is a task force comprised mostly of public officials and people who work for her.
The City Council is taking a different approach. Tomorrow morning at 9, the council will hold a special meeting to get an update on crime statistics and to discuss proposals aimed at curbing violence. The council will hear citizens’ comments on each proposal.
Crime is our city’s most intractable problem. But at least some folks at City Hall are moving quickly to address it, with specific proposals — and maximum citizen input.
