City prepares for big crowds ahead of busy New Year's Eve and Sugar Bowl weekend

The city is expecting hotel occupancy to hit 90% over the weekend, making it one of the best New Year's for tourism.

NEW ORLEANS — From the Sugar Bowl to fireworks and the Fleur De Lis Drop, it’s going to be a busy weekend in New Orleans.

“I love the culture,” Terry Mourer said. “I love the city, I love the history, I love the food.”

Tourists like Terry and Stella Mourer are already flooding the French Quarter. They traveled nine hours by train for what they called a dream weekend in the Crescent City.

“It’s a party town,” Stella Mourer said. “The best place to come celebrate New Year's Eve.”

The city is expecting hotel occupancy to hit 90% over the weekend, making it one of the best New Year's for tourism.

“We have tons of fans in town for the Sugar Bowl,” Kelly Shulz said. “We have a Pelicans game on New Year's Eve, and then of course the Fleur De Lis drop.

The Fleur De Lis drop is a tradition for New Orleans, this year, even though Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve broadcast is skipping the city, the event will still continue as years before, with the help of New Orleans and company.

“New Orleans and Company stepped up to make sure that there could still be a Fleur De Lis drop, because That’s such an iconic part of our city and part of the NYE tradition that we’ve had in the city,” Shulz said.

And as the clock strikes midnight, a fireworks how will take over the sky above the Mississippi River. On New Year's Day, the Texas Longhorns will take on the Washington Huskies at the Superdome. The game is a sold out event, bringing tens of thousands of visitors alone.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl parade is also on Sunday. Floats and Bands will roll along Decatur Street, starting at 2:30 p.m. in the afternoon.
