Christmas Eve bonfires rescheduled due to rain forecast

Forecasts show a high chance of rain on Sunday, with the heaviest rain around the time of lighting.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. — A rainy forecast has organizers with Christmas Eve tradition, Festival of the Bonfires, making a hard decision to reschedule the event a day earlier.

Due to the inclement weather forecast for Christmas Eve, the Christmas Eve Lighting of the Bonfires has been rescheduled to Saturday, December 23rd, at 7 p.m.

“Rescheduling the lighting of the bonfires is a hard decision, but our citizens’ and visitors’ safety is of the highest importance to each of our offices. What’s important to remember is that while the date may have changed, we still have the opportunity to gather with family and friends to celebrate Christmas and honor our cherished tradition,” Parish President Pete Dufresne said.

The decision to reschedule was made by St. James Parish Officials, St. John Parish Officials, and officials with the towns of Lutcher, Gramercy, the St. John Parish Fire Department, St. James Sheriff Office, St. John Sheriff Office, and the Pontchartrain Levee Board.

Forecasts show a high chance of rain on Sunday, with the heaviest rain around the time of lighting. However, the wind and weather forecast will be favorable on Saturday, which will allow the much-loved tradition to continue while keeping everyone’s safety in mind event, according to event organizers.

“Rescheduling the lighting of the bonfires will help ensure a fun and safe event for all and ensure Papa Noel can find his way to the River Parishes before Christmas,” said Parish President Hotard.

Traffic in the area will still follow a contraflow pattern around the bonfire viewing.
