Chalmette Ferry returns to service over the weekend, RTA says

According to the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority, the service began again at 6 a.m. on Saturday.
Ferry users say not having the boat available will make river crossings more difficult.

CHALMETTE, La. — After more than three months of service suspension due to a mandatory drydock inspection conducted by the United States Coast Guard, the Chalmette Ferry returned to service this weekend.

According to the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority, the service began again at 6 a.m. on Saturday after work to the vessel was completed over the summer, including upgrades to the propellers, tail shafts, pumps, piping, hydraulic, mechanical, and steering systems, ensuring they are all in optimal condition, along with sandblasting and a fresh new paint job.

“This routine yet important drydock inspection underscores RTA's commitment to providing safe and reliable transportation to our riders, and we're pleased to have the Chalmette ferry back in service,” said Lona Edwards Hankins, Chief Executive Officer, RTA.

“This timely maintenance is a win for our regional infrastructure, ensuring the ferry's continued reliability. I want to offer a big thank-you to our RTA operations team and to our contractors who worked tirelessly to make this happen.”
