Chalmette Ferry back in service after truck plunged off terminal into the river

A truck plunged off the terminal into the river on Saturday. The Chalmette ferry has returned to service as of 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

NEW ORLEANS — The Chalmette Ferry is back in service after it was taken out of service following an incident where a truck drove off the terminal and into the Mississippi River.

The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority announced on social media that the Chalmette ferry has returned to service as of 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 17.

On Saturday, the Chalmette-Lower Algiers ferry was taken out of service after a person in a truck was seen rolling into the river at the terminal on the Chalmette side. A Coast Guard search was underway but was suspended Saturday evening.

Workers at Chalmette Refining reported they saw a person “swimming from the truck towards the West Bank.” The Coast Guard is now working to recover the truck from the river.

It is still unclear what led to the driver plunging into the river.
