NEW ORLEANS – Rep. Cedric Richmond, Louisiana’s lone congressional democrat, retained his seat in the US Congress.
Richmond faced three opponents in the race: Belden Batiste, Shawndra Rodriguez and Jesse Schmidt, none of whom are affiliated with a political party.
Richmond, a New Orleans native, was well positioned to win from the start. He was elected chairman of the influential Congressional Black Caucus in 2016 and could gain a more prominent role in The House if democrats regain control.
Richmond has said that he would consider running for a leadership position of the House flips, but would defer to other democrat leaders that may have their eyes set on those positions.
