METAIRIE, La. — Northbound lanes of the Causeway Bridge over Lake Pontchartrain have reopened after being temporarily shut down Saturday morning due to what officials described as a "serious incident."
The Greater New Orleans Expressway Commission Police Department initially announced the closure at 11:40 a.m., estimating it would last about an hour.
Social media posts from stranded drivers showed flames and a thick plume of black smoke rising into the air, with motorists standing outside their vehicles watching the scene unfold.
By early afternoon, traffic resumed, and the bridge was fully operational. Details about the cause of the incident or any potential injuries have not yet been released by the Causeway Police.
