Businesses evacuated in Boutte due to gas leak

Crews are currently working to locate the leak and repair the issue.

BOUTTE, La. — The St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office announced on social media a gas leak in Boutte that has led to several businesses in the area of U.S. Highway 90 and Melonie Street being evacuated on Thursday.

"Atmos Energy advised that there is a gas leak in the area of Highway 90 and Melonie Street in Boutte," the post stated. "They are working to determine where the leak originated, but they did advise that it's underground. Out of an abundance of caution, they have evacuated several businesses in the immediate area. Please avoid this area if possible!"

UPDATE: 4:15 p.m. Thursday:

  • The line has been depressurized
  • The evacuation has been lifted
  • Atmos has to replace the entire main line
  • Businesses and residents east of Majoria’s through River Parish Community College will be out of natural gas
  • Residents on Myrtle, Schmill, Breaux, and Melonie Streets will be affected
  • The outage includes approximately 38 active customers
  • Atmos could not provide a timeframe for the repairs to be completed but was hopeful it would be by the end of the weekend.
