Blighted building collapse goes viral after smashing social media-influencer's car

New Orleans-based content creator Alex Robinson posted a video to social media after a Central City building collapsed – sending debris through her car's windshield.

NEW ORLEANS — Alex Robinson’s car still sits parked in the rubble.

“I turned the corner right there and noticed something was on my car,” New Orleans-based content creator Alex Robinson said.

Her car was covered in bricks and debris from a building that collapsed on Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.

“Once it set in, I just crouched down and started crying,” Robinson said.

On Saturday, the well-known social media influencer shared the aftermath with her over thirty-five thousand followers

“I told them, I’m sorry I’m in shock,” Robinson said.

Two days later, she says NOPD finally allowed her behind the caution tape. There she found her entire back seat and everything inside of it coated in debris and everything inside of it coated in debris.

“There are bricks in my back seat, like literal pieces of a building in the back seat,” Robinson said.

According to the city’s dashboard, the property is the subject of over a dozen code violations, weeds and plant overgrowth, sanitation issues and rodent infestations to name a few.

According to NOPD and NOFD, they turned Saturday’s incident report over to the city for investigation.

Our calls to the Department of Permits and Safety and Council Member Lesli Harris were never returned.

“I hold the city to a higher standard than I hold building owners, and I think this is their fault,” Robinson said.

For a city in constant battle with blight, Robinson hopes using her voice can make a difference.

Demolition crews on the scene told WWL Louisiana they hope to have the building demolished and the street open before Tuesday.
