LAPLACE, La. — A 61-year-old man on a bicycle was killed Friday evening in a two-vehicle crash on US 61 near Belle Terre Boulevard in St. John the Baptist Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

Troopers from State Police Troop B responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m. after a 2016 Ford F-150 struck John Howard of LaPlace as he attempted to cross US 61 on his bicycle.

Preliminary LSP findings indicate Howard crossed the northbound lanes and the left southbound lane of US 61 before entering the right southbound lane, directly into the pickup truck’s path. Howard sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured. State police say impairment is not suspected on the driver’s part, but a voluntary blood sample was collected for analysis. Investigators have not determined whether Howard was impaired, and routine toxicology results are pending.

The crash remains under investigation.
