BATON ROUGE -- State Police are investigating after Baton Rouge police fatally shot a man during a struggle at an apartment complex Monday evening.
State Police on Tuesday identified the man as 23-year-old Calvin Toney.
The shooting happened about 6:30 p.m. as BRPD officers escorted a caseworker with the state Department of Children and Family Services who was conducting an investigation at the Palms Apartments on McClelland Drive, according to WBRZ-TV.
East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore described a chaotic confrontation between an officer and Toney, telling WBRZ that the man possibly tried to reach for the officer’s stun gun.
“There was a struggle … a long struggle … (with officers) which led to the shooting,” Moore said.
Authorities said officer had a minor injury but did not elaborate. The names of the officers involved were not immediately released.
As police began their investigation evening, a crowd gathered around the crime scene tape.
Occasionally, the mood became angry toward police as people chanted "hands up, don't shoot!" and "black lives matter!”
A State Police spokesperson told WBRZ there was officer-issued body camera video of the incident and it was being reviewed. Video was not released Monday.
Authorities would not say if investigators recovered any weapons at the scene.
“We're still collecting evidence at this point,” a State Police spokesperson said during a news conference at 10:00 Monday night.
Details of the DCFS investigation were also not released Monday.
