NAPOLEONVILLE – An Assumption Parish inmate died on Sunday morning after collapsing in his cell, according to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The inmate, Edward Murphy, collapsed in his cell around 6:25 a.m. on Sunday and correctional officers came to his aid.
According to the sheriff’s office, correctional officers began CPR and call Acadian Ambulance who arrived at the facility a short time later.
Murphy was rushed to the Thibodaux Regional Medical Center where he died around 8 a.m. The sheriff’s office says that Murphy was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday by Louisiana State Police on charges of DWI, driving under a suspended license and expired motor vehicle inspection tag.
Murphy was being held in a temporary holding area and was housed alone, the sheriff’s office says.
Murphy’s family has been notified and a full review is underway but it is believed that Murphy died as a result of an illness. Murphy had a documented history of cardiovascular disease, the sheriff’s office says.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
