WEST FELICIANA – Three inmates at Angola Prison are being disciplined after they refused to work, sparking a brief strike from 27 other inmates, according to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

Two inmates, 55-year-old Emanuel Williams and 44-year-old Earl Harris, broke out of the security line around 8 a.m. Tuesday as they were heading to work and refused to obey orders, according to a department spokesperson. They attacked two corrections officers who attempted to restrain them.

Another inmate, 40-year-old Roy Walker, also refused to go to work and laid down. Following the three inmates’ actions, 27 other inmates, who were also in the line, also refused to go to work, the department says.

Williams broke his ankle and the two officers received minor injuries after being punched in the face and head.

Officers were able to gain control and took the other 27 inmates back to their cells. They later returned to work Tuesday afternoon.

Williams, Harris and Walker are in disciplinary segregation following their actions. Harris and Walker are expected to be charged for their crimes.

According to the Department of Safety and Corrections, Williams is serving 55 years for a 1991 armed robbery committed in Orleans Parish. Harris is serving a life sentence for fourth offense second degree aggravated battery committed in Jefferson Parish and Walker is serving 50 years for conspiracy to commit armed robbery and attempted manslaughter committed in Jefferson Parish.
