'It's really devastating:' Salon owner remembers third victim of Broadmoor crash

Salon owner Beverly Smith is asking people to pray for Herbert's family. She said she was a longtime customer of the salon.

NEW ORLEANS — Friends and family of 54-year-old Schwann Herbert mourned their loss Friday. 

Herbert was among the seven people injured inside the Unity One hair salon when a suspected stolen vehicle slammed into the building at Washington Avenue and South White Street on Wednesday night.

Herbert suffered serious burns when the vehicle and the building burst into flames. She was taken to the hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead early Thursday evening, the New Orleans Advocate reported.

A friend left flowers in the mailbox of her home on nearby General Taylor Street.

"I was so happy that she lived when they first said it, but now they're saying that she passed. It's really devastating," Smith said.

Smith also asked people to pray for the two teenagers who died in the vehicle that hit her building.

On Friday, she let our camera in the charred beauty salon. Smith called it a total loss.

"I don't think I can salvage anything in the building. Everything is burned to a crisp," Smith said.

"Just to look at it, I can't look at it. It's heartbreaking just for me to look at the building," she said.

Bishop Chante Sutton held bible study classes in the building on Tuesday nights. He said that on Saturday at 5 p.m., a vigil will be held for community leaders, local clergy and neighbors to come together in prayer.

Both Sutton and Smith vow to rebuild.

"Our hope and expectation is that people won't give up on us, that they would help us through prayer," Sutton said.
