NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board reported that mosquitoes collected this week have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV).
"WNV cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes and can be transmitted to humans and animals by the bite of an infected mosquito," a release said.
The NOMTRCB plans to conduct an adult mosquito abatement on Friday from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m, weather permitting. The following areas will be treated:
- Black Pearl and Audubon bounded by St Charles Ave, Nashville Ave, and the Mississippi River.
- Lakeview bounded by Allen Toussaint Blvd, I-610, West End Blvd, and Orleans Ave.
- Plum Orchard and Read Boulevard West bounded by Dwyer Rd, Chef Menteur Rd, I-10, and Read Blvd.
Health officials said WNV infections are typically asymptomatic. However, common symptoms include:
- headache
- body aches
- joint pain
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- rash
