NEW ORLEANS — Local health leaders and the community came together Saturday for Health and Wellness Day at Joe Brown Recreation Center.
This comes after several New Orleans East residents told Oschner they felt they had barriers to access to healthcare, as well as continuity of care, said Yvens Laborde, Oschner's chief community medical officer.
"By creating an event like this, it's really critically important that we center the needs of the community," he said.
This event allowed New Orleans East families to get a variety of health and wellness screenings, such as access to HIV testing and flu vaccines.
"We also make it personalized and create an atmosphere where its actually helpful, joyful and there's a sense of happiness and celebration because oftentimes people associate health and well-being with the doctor or the hospital."
They were also able to learn about nutrition, lifestyle programs, and physical activity programs. Screening services are still available through your doctor's office.
