Lafayette Academy to close at end of year, NOLA-PS extends application deadline

The deadline to submit NCAP applications is Friday, Jan. 26 at 11:59 p.m.

NEW ORLEANS — NOLA Public Schools has extended the deadline for Lafayette Academy Charter School parents to enroll their children into another school. This comes after school officials announced that the school will close at the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

Parents now have until Fri., Jan. 26 at 11:59 p.m. to submit the NOLA-PS Common Application Process (NCAP).

School officials said the extension will give parents more time and help families who may need additional time to review school choices. NOLA-PS’ enrollment team members said they are reaching out to Lafayette families to provide any assistance they may need.

They said they are committed to having match results for parents and students by the deadline of April 30. However, they said there could be delays due to changes in the NCAP timeline.

School officials said the Dec. 18 deadline for enrollment passed and no transformation applications were received from charter management organizations to operate Lafayette Academy, "it was not due to the school's enrollment size," a school official said.

"We understand this is difficult news for families to hear, and it’s not a decision I take lightly. Ultimately, my decision is grounded in our district’s commitment to providing a high-quality education for all scholars, said Superintendent Dr. Williams.

She said she's committed to empowering Lafayette families and providing them with the opportunity to choose a school that best meets their children's unique needs for the upcoming school year. Dr. Williams and NOLA-PS accountability team are working on developing a 5-year portfolio plan.

"Our commitment to transparency is key in documenting decision-making processes, especially in complex scenarios amid declining enrollment. The plan will enable us to use data as we comprehensively assess impacts, making each decision, from opening new schools to improving program variety, a step towards shaping a positive future for education within NOLA-PS," Dr. Williams explained.

NOLA-PS encourages Lafayette Academy families to participate in the NOLA Public Schools Common Application Process (NCAP). School officials said will help parents secure placements at their preferred schools. Students in grades K-7 will receive priority in the application.

School Officials said the district's open siting process will help maintain the operation of Lafayette Academy Charter School along with Robert Russa Moton Charter School for the 2024-2025 school year.

Before applying for the 2024-2025 school year, NOLA-PS encourages families to research school choices. To assist in this process, we provide several resources at Enrollnolaps.com:

  • Explore Schools tool (nola.ps/explore): K-12 schools and Early Childhood school profiles provide information on school location, grades served, school performance, and extracurricular activities.
  • Guidance for Families: Additional online videos and interactive resources are available and can assist you in making smart school choices, filling out the NCAP, and more.

Families who do not participate in the Main Round are welcome to participate in subsequent enrollment opportunities, although it is important to note that some schools may have full rosters from the Main Round.
