East St. John High School closed sheriff's office investigates social media shooting threat

The sheriff's office said a 17-year-old student confessed to social media threats Friday, but detectives he was not planning on carrying out any violence.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. — A student who apparently threatened a shooting at a St. John Parish high school on social media had not planned on carrying out any attack, the sheriff's office said Friday.

A 17-year-old student at East St. John apparently confessed Friday to making the threatening post on social media.

The post circulated on social media Thursday night, catching the attention of concerned community members and law enforcement.'

"The student was not planning to carry out the threat," Sheriff Mike Tregre said Friday morning. "Detectives learned the student's motive was that he was angry for being disciplined by the school for a previous matter,"

Still, East St. John High School in reserve remained closed Friday in what the parish sheriff called an "abundance of caution."

"The incident is still under investigation," Sheriff Tregre said.
