Organization making sure students in need have school supplies

If you live in St. Bernard Parish and need help paying for your child’s school supplies, stop by the House and Redevelopment Office.

ST BERNARD, La. — Going back to school is bittersweet for students like Zirie Tucker.

“I’m kind of excited,” Tucker said.

Paying the back-to-school shopping bill can be stressful for their parents, though.

“It’s a major undertaking to get a child ready for school in the New Orleans school system,” Bishop of Outreach Dwight Gunn said.

That’s why Compassion International and Grace and Glory church did the shopping for them, giving out 160 backpacks full of supplies to students in need.

“It’s so exciting to be able to do something like this in New Orleans,” Gunn said.

The recipients were campers at Soar with Lacor, a summer camp designed to prepare students in New Orleans for the workforce.

“We focus on character development,” Lacor CEO Dr. Raymond Delaney said. “We focus on financial and digital literacy.”

Lacor CEO Dr. Raymond Delaney says it’s his mission to step in and help parents like his and students like Zirie.

“I’m very excited, because you never realize what people are going through,”

If you live in St. Bernard Parish and need help paying for your child’s school supplies, stop by the House and Redevelopment Office from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. through Wednesday, July 10. You can drop off an application for financial assistance.
