NEW ORLEANS — A Monday night shooting in New Orleans has left a second freshman from Warren Easton Charter High School dead. Family members of Tyler Ellis, 15, said he was a young athlete who was a member of the football team and on the honor roll.
Police say just before 9 p.m. they got a call about a shooting on St. Roch Avenue. Family members say it happened at a home where Ellis lived. When officers arrived, they found out someone had already taken Ellis to the hospital. He died shortly after.
His death comes after the January 29th shooting death of freshman Kennedi Belton, 15, who was killed in the Little Woods Community after a weekend sleepover. Police arrested Andre Skinner, 19, who, according to court records, was handling a gun when it went off.
“That is a sad situation,” said Warren Easton parent Shontell Myers.
Myers says losing two students from the same school is tough. She was waiting to pick up her ninth and tenth-grade daughters Tuesday afternoon.
“It hurts the kids. The last student that passed away, my daughter she was real upset and she’s still hurt behind that situation so I can only imagine her hearing that new information today,” Myers said. “I can only imagine how she feels now.”
Police issued an arrest warrant for a 15-year-old juvenile male for negligent homicide in relation to Ellis' death, according to a press release.
