Violent holiday weekend across New Orleans Metro: 5 killed in 3 days

NOPD reported three homicides and JPSO reported two between Saturday and Christmas Day.

NEW ORLEANS — It was a violent holiday weekend across the New Orleans metro. NOPD reported three homicides and JPSO reported two between Saturday and Christmas Day.

On Saturday afternoon, a 43-year-old man was shot in Algiers in the 6400 Block of Isadore Street. He was taken to the hospital where he died, NOPD said.

On Sunday, NOPD said a deputy sheriff heard two gunshots in downtown New Orleans. When police arrived, they found a woman shot near Canal and Exchange Place. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

On Monday, New Orleans Police said a man was shot and killed after an altercation in Mid-City near Canal and South Carrollton Avenue around 10 p.m. NOPD said the suspect fled the scene and the victim died at the hospital.

Meanwhile, JPSO said a man was found shot in the parking lot of a business around 5 a.m. Christmas Eve morning in the 4400 Block of Wabash Street. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said the victim died at the scene.

On Christmas night, JPSO also responded to a shooting at an apartment complex in the 1000 Block of Manhattan Blvd. in Harvey. Deputies found a man dead inside the residence.

Deputies said they've identified a suspect in the Harvey shooting, 23-year-old Talvis Keller, and obtained an arrest warrant for second-degree murder.

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick released a statement over the weekend.

"During the holiday season, cities across the country experience an unfortunate uptick in crime. Our dedicated detectives are aggressively investigating the incidents, gathering information to identify and apprehend those responsible," Kirkpatrick said.

The violence comes less than two weeks after New Orleans experienced a 13-day period with zero homicides for the first time since 2021.

The Jefferson and Orleans Parish Coroner's Offices have not released the identity of the victims at this time.
