Video: Sparks fly as thieves use power tools to steal ATM cash

The video shows two masked men dressed in coveralls and gloves approach the ATM with an extension cord, crowbars, and a power angle grinder.

NEW ORLEANS — A brazen ATM burglary in New Orleans was caught on a convenience store’s security camera as a pair of thieves used a powered angle grinder to cut open the machine and steal the cash inside.

Police in New Orleans say it happened early Monday morning at the Lakeview Good and Gas Chevron gas station in the 5100 block of Canal Boulevard.

The video shows two masked men dressed in coveralls and gloves approach the ATM with an extension cord, crowbars, and a power angle grinder.

One thief uses the power tool to, after some effort, cut open the teller machine and steal the strong box inside filled with cash.

“The front door to the business was smashed and the security room was ransacked. The business camera system was taken, and $200 was stolen from the cash register. In addition to that, the ATM was damaged and the cash box which contained $1,000 was stolen,” an NOPD report said.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
