NEW ORLEANS — Ochsner identified one of its nurses as the woman killed in a shooting on Bourbon Street early Sunday morning.
Julie Couvillon, 36, worked at Ochsner for 13 years, the hospital said in a statement.
“Julie was a beloved nurse who dedicated her life to caring for others. This is a devastating loss to the nurses, employees, physicians and staff across our system,” the statement read in part. “We offer our deepest condolences to her family and the families of the other victims."
The shooting happened about 3:15 a.m. in the 400 block of Bourbon Street. Police said a security guard was removing Louis Barnes from Willie’s Chicken Shack when he reached for the guard’s gun. Moments later, the gun went off. Police have said Barnes pulled the trigger.
Couvillon was hit while she was walked along Bourbon, Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said. She died a short time later at University Medical Center.
Barnes hit himself in the shoulder with a bullet and also hit the security guard during the incident, Ferguson said. Barnes was arrested after he was released from the hospital and was booked with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
His bond was Sunday evening at $1.5 million dollars.
A third man was injured during the incident but not by gunfire, police said.
