NEW ORLEANS — Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield has been added to Lundi Gras Festival lineup after being released from prison ahead of his full sentence.
Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, who was serving a one-year prison sentence for diverting $1.3 million in charity funds to personal accounts, was released months early and was added to the Lundi Gras Festival's lineup, according to offbeat.com.
Mayfield went to prison in 2022 after a nearly seven-year investigation revealed the Grammy award-winning musician had made numerous purchases using public funds, including a 24-karat gold-plated bejeweled trumpet, $18,000 for lodging and meals at the Ritz-Carlton in New York including an $1,345 bill for a single breakfast.
Mayfield's sentence was 18 months. He and his business partner Ronald Markham were ordered to pay back more than $1.3 million to the New Orleans Public Library Foundation, which he had been diverting funds from.
He was also ordered to conduct 500 hours of free music lessons for New Orleans youth.
Mayfield was released three months early.
